How to Get Started With Gardening
Gardening is great fun and the amount of satisfaction you get while watching your garden grow in to beautiful flowers, fruits and vegetables is beyond compare. If you are a beginner and are speculative of your gardening abilities, here’s news for you. Getting started with gardening is not as hard as you thought. Here are some simple tips that will help you get started with gardening:
Choose the right plants
For starters try to pick out starter garden plants and shrubs that are appropriate to your location and climate that require little maintenance. Plants are much easier for first timers to start with than seeds. You can experiment with seeds once you get your basics right.
Get the right tools
The right tools will make gardening a lot easier. Recommended garden tools for beginners include garden shovel, hoe, cultivator, trowel and a pair of gloves. These tools can be brought from any garden store and will not cost you a lot of money.
Find the right plot
Once you have the right tools and plants, you will need to find a plot to start your garden. Use a relatively small patch of land to start with. Remember that plants need sunlight to grow, so the right plot is the one that receives at-least six to seven hours of sunlight in a day. In addition to sunlight you also need to ensure that your plot is close enough to your water source.
Ready up the plot for gardening
The first thing you got to do after choosing your plot is weeding. Weeding is the process of killing weeds in the plot by either pulling them out with your hands or even better using a garden hoe to cut out their roots. As far as possible do not use weedicides or other chemicals to kill the weeds as this could hamper growth of regular plants as well.
Once the weeding is done, use a shovel or garden tiller to turn the soil over. Add some natural composite to increase the nutrient levels of the soil. More nutrients directly mean healthier plants that grow faster.
Start Planting
This is the fun part. Start to dig holes as per the directions for specific plants. Once done, place the plant into the hole covering up root ball with mud. Remember to properly space plants and not plant them too close to each other.
Water your plants
Once you are done planting, water your plants so that the soil settles down. Do not add excessive water as this could actually do more harm than good especially if your plants are fragile. In addition always use a gentle spray of water over the plants.
Maintain Your Garden
Water your plants on a regular basis. The best time to water is during early hours of the morning when there is less chance of the water being evaporated. Ensure that your plants are protected from animal pests by properly fencing your garden. If you see signs of insect pests use proper insecticides. You will also need to keep a look out for weeds that could pop up every now and them.
